I. Introduction

As an outdoor-oriented rock climbing club, there is invariably risk involved in CSU Alpine club
activities. In order to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all of our members, we have
identified several categories of risk for our members to be aware of. By engaging in club
activities, members agree that they understand and assume the risk associated with climbing.

II. Identified Risks

A. Physical Risk
Climbing, like all outdoor activities, is inherently dangerous. Falling can cause serious injury
from any height. While climbing, there may be objective hazards (rockfall, weather, etc.).
Members are expected to be aware of their surroundings and climb within their limits. CSU
Alpine advises the use of helmets to protect the member from falling objects. Members are
expected to know how to properly belay or take lessons to learn before belaying other members.
Assisted Belay Devices are highly encouraged. It is the responsibility of the member to properly
use and check any hardware or gear they are using,
There are health risks associated with physical activity (heart stress, musculoskeletal injury,
muscular fatigue, dehydration, skin injury, etc). Members are expected to be aware of the
physical effects of climbing. If a member develops any pain, fatigue, or injury that does not go
away as expected they are encouraged to seek qualified care.
B. Reputational Risk
A positive reputation with Colorado State University’s students and staff is a priority for the
club. The climbing community values its ethics and culture. We want to represent ourselves as
steward of the land,
When climbing outside, members are expected to respect other visitors and present themselves,
and the club in a reputable fashion. Trip Leaders and Officers will be aware of proper outdoor
climbing etiquette and will be role models for members. Members will be informed of the Leave
No Trace Principles and will be encouraged to follow them.

C. Emotional Risk
Climbing can be a very personal and emotional experience. CSU Alpine prioritizes the safety of
our members including emotional needs.
Members may experience many emotions, both positive and negative. The goal of CSU Alpine is
to be a space of growth and members should be able to express these feelings healthily, safely,
and without judgment.
The CSU Alpine is an inclusive place for everyone; therefore, members must follow the
Colorado State University Principles of Community.
D. Financial Risk
Climbing gear is expensive. Members are held responsible for their gear and equipment. Lost or
damaged personal gear is the member's liability. Club gear will be maintained and inspected

according to industry standards, but should a member use it, they are responsible for inspecting it
and properly using it.

III. Assumption of Risk and Release of Liability

This document does not represent an exclusive or exhaustive list of possible injuries, trauma, or
damages a member may incur as a result of climbing. Most of these injuries are rare, and
members are not likely to encounter them. However, it is important that members understand the
risk associated with club activities.
